چکیده

Two spectroscopic instruments, a 1/4 meter Ebert-Fastie spectrometer and a Michelson interferometer, were flown aboard the NCAR Electra during the ALOHA-90 campaign. These instruments were designed to carry out measurements of the brightnesses and rotational temperatures of the 02 Atmospheric (0-1) band and several OH Meinel bands simultaneously with sodium lidar observations. The spectrometer results taken during the nights of March 25 and March 31 are reported. Wave-like oscillations in both 02 and OH airglow brightnesses were clearly present during both flights and a strong positive correlation of OH band brightness with sodium column density was found. A slightly weaker correlation of 02 band brightness with sodium column density was also detected. The measured brightness ratio between the OH (7-4) and (7-3) bands is found to be 11.2+0.3, which is in good agreement with the calculated ratios of 12.8 by Mies [1974] and 10.2 by Langhoff et al. [1986].

Observations of OI 557.7 nm nightglow at Kolhapur (17 N), India

Ground-based nightglow observations of the atomic oxygen green line at 557.7 nm have been carried out at a low latitude station Kolhapur (17 N), India, during November 2003–April 2004 and December 2004–May 2005. The nocturnal behaviour of OI 557.7 nm intensity and a comparative study with simultaneous OH Meinel band temperature measurements has been presented. OI 557.7 nm intensity and OH tempe...

A Full-Wave Investigation of the Use of a 'Cancellation Factor' in GW-Airglow Interaction Studies

Atmospheric gravity waves (GWs) perturb minor species involved in the chemical reactions of airglow emissions in the mesopause region of the earth's atmosphere. The so-called 'Cancellation Factor' (CF) is defined as a transfer function relating the amplitude of airglow brightness fluctuation to the amplitude of GW-induced fluctuation in temperature [Swenson and Gardner, 1998]. This transfer fac...

Understanding the variability of nightside temperatures, NO UV and O2 IR nightglow emissions in the Venus upper atmosphere

[1] Venus Express (VEX) has been monitoring key nightglow emissions and thermal features (O2 IR nightglow, NO UV nightglow, and nightside temperatures) which contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the global dynamics and circulation patterns above ∼90 km. The nightglow emissions serve as effective tracers of Venus’ middle and upper atmosphere global wind system due to their variable pea...

Kinetic parameters for OH nightglow modeling consistent with recent laboratory measurements

An improved kinetic model for the Meinel bands of OH has been constructed from rate constants and Einstein A coefficients derived in recent laboratory experiments. Using a semiempirical parameterization of the state-to-state rate constants for OH(v) quenching by O2, the absolute OH(v) nightglow radiances are modeled to within the accuracies of the atmospheric constituent concentrations and the ...

First observations from a CCD all-sky spectrograph at Barentsburg (Spitsbergen)

A digital CCD all-sky spectrograph was made by the Polar Geophysical Institute (PGI) to support IPY activity in auroral research. The device was tested at the Barentsburg observatory of PGI during the winter season of 2005– 2006. The spectrograph is based on a cooled CCD and a transmission grating. The main features of this spectrograph are: a wide field of view (∼180), a wide spectral range (3...
